This box is taking Home Baristas on a tour of the best independent coffee shops and roasters from iconic Gold Coast beaches including; Tweed Heads, Coolangatta, and Burleigh Heads, home to some of Australia’s best surfing spots where beach communities and café culture rule the scene.
When you think about the Gold Coast, a few things might come to mind; sun and salty skin by day, and a great party town by night – where you’re more likely to bring the WHOLE club home! What’s behind this great community? The expected, and much-needed high standard of their precious cup of Joe to get up and at ’em enjoying paradise.
Local coffee roasters such as Quest, Social Espresso, Zephyr, and Ground Control have raised the bar for specialty coffee on the Gold Coast that fuels a zest for life locally.
For this month’s City Choice Collection Coffee Box, we have collaborated with local coffee lover Carlos Farra A.K.A @ec.barista who has hand-picked four of the Gold Coast’s finest coffees.
So take a quick trip to the sunny Gold Coast (or if you’re a local enjoy with pride and convenience) by sipping on this fantastic collection. Oh, with respect – do it in the sun!
“A hidden gem with great vibes” and “consistently the best beans on the GC” are just some raving comments that coffee lovers and connoisseurs say about this cafe and roastery that has built a formidable reputation in a few short years and supplies many cafes and restaurants around and beyond. Established by WA transports and dynamic coffee duo, Mitch and Hayley, this roastery is known for with their unique coffee blends that are created to reflect customers’ tastes and palate profiles. They change their variety of single origins on a weekly basis that allows their loyal customers to continually taste new beans – of course, we love them! The house blend El Cucho means ‘old friend’ and perfectly describes this easy-going, consistently reliable blend of beans from three different areas of Colombia that are medium roasted and brimming with notes of sweet milk chocolate topped with malt and caramel flavours. Yum!
As the first organic coffee roaster in Burleigh Heads, Quest encompasses everything that coffee lovers appreciate with a focus on organic, ethical and sustainable. Quest is their namesake and motto and they strive to perfect the most exceptional espresso on the Gold Coast with no less than 30 steps (yes, you read that right!) 30 steps involved in their quest to create the perfect espresso. Roasters and baristas, Courtney and Paul roast 98% organic beans from Rain Forest Alliance and fair trade farms and extend their community support of families and children of coffee growers. The single origin Guatemala is grown in a high altitude and cooler climate producing a unique wine-like quality and are medium roasted for a balanced quality to be enjoyed as espresso or with milk.
The balcony at Zephyr cafe and roastery maybe the local’s favourite spot to sip coffee while taking in sweeping sea views but this roastery is best known for air roasting its beans on-site with their state of the art Chinook Piccolo air flow roaster which ensures each bean is roasted evenly to perfection. Resident owner and coffee guru, Justin Diamonopoulous chose air roasting so the flavours in every bean can be developed and roasted without any hint of burning or ashy flavours during the roasting process to produce a cup that’s consistently bold, full-bodied, and smooth. The Tempest is their bold espresso blend, a medium to dark roast of Ethiopian, PNG, and Tanzanian beans with delicious notes of dark chocolate, stone fruit and rich berries.
Ground Control cafe and roastery in Tweed Heads attracts local and international coffee lovers with their delicious coffee (of course) as well as their unique location in an industrial warehouse where customers are always welcome to view and learn about their coffee roasting in action. Some interested coffee enthusiasts have even been given guided tours of the roastery and can partake in the roasting making so that your coffee experience is truly hands-on. All their beans are ethically sourced and grown in high altitudes and their popular Major Tom blend is a medium roast of four beans from Colombia, Sumatra, Costa Rica, and Peru with notes of toffee, milk chocolate, and dark berries
