It’s our one-year anniversary Newcastle City Choice Collection Coffee Box 013! After a year of curating coffee collections from a different city each month in our coffee plan, we’re back in Newy where it all began to celebrate!
In just a year we’ve seen Newcastle’s coffee scene grow from just a small bunch of cafes in Newcastle roasting their own brew to a number of locals trying their hands at roasting their own beans.
At first, it was just one, then two, and now there are over ten just here in Newcastle. Making us coffee lovers pretty proud of the booming scene.

Local coffee boffin, Alaric Daley; is the man behind the beard at CBD café New Slang Coffee Brewers and roastery Unison Coffee Roasters. Al’s team of coffee and milk maestros strive to perfect the art of sourcing green beans to roasting custom profiles unique to each coffee to produce a perfectly balanced tasty brew. Al says all of this happens in Unison and the results speak for themselves. His thirst for fresh seasonal coffees and new roasting techniques creates a perfectly balanced brew that keeps coffee lovers happy from new coffee destinations like Equium Social in Mayfield to CBD’s New Slang. If you’re in town, head over there for an elevated Pour Over. We love that Al agrees every coffee has a story! Expect smooth flavours of caramel, malt, and hazelnut in this seasonal blend from Central American & African coffees.
Iconic Merewether Beach is famous for International surf competitions – but where is the local’s coffee destination out of the spotlight? Frothers Coffee Shop is the go-to for connoisseur insiders who know the finest quality coffee in the hood by the Owner’s drop Colour Dot Coffee Roastery. Career Barista turned Cafe Owner and Roaster; Nathaniel James’ passion to create the perfect balanced blend comes from seeking out the highest quality of beans available to produce a roast that’s bursting with unique flavours. No wonder the locals flock to Frothers to drink this all day long as they order something equally unique from the daily specials – French toast bagel, or nachos bagel anyone? Nathaniel pushes all the delicious creative culinary boundaries in everything he does…stay tuned to hear about his upcoming coffee-infused craft beer.
Is there anything Daniel ‘The Mullet Lord’ Brown can’t do? The Central Coast surfer that Newcastle has claimed their own is talented in the most literal sense – he makes coffee good, he surfs great, he dresses phenomenally…and he does it all with unconditional love and laughter! After first opening, a popup Café in a vintage shop Browny then saved to open Lords Coffee & Associates on Beaumont Street. He has been firing ever since – serving delicious coffee, smiles, and friendly banter by day and surfing in the afternoon with his brew crew, wife, and baby Rio – those that froth together surf together! A newcomer to roasting his own bean but he has created a cosy coffee corner for the vibrant city around him dreamt up from years of being in hospitality. Expect a vibrant brew he’s created from Colombia and Brazilian beans that goes down easy. We’re also eyeing off his Espresso Martini mixer for this year’s Chrissy-Tini Box!
The brain trust behind Newcastle’s greatest cult neighbourhood cafes we have frequented since year dot; Suspension ‘Spennos’ on buzzing Beaumont St, The ‘Eddy’ Edwards on Parry St in Newcastle West, and Good Brother in the CBD – partners Chris and Steph personify the very fabric of Newcastle’s coffee culture. Their signature coffee destinations all boast a soulful artsy vibe serving strong, rich, and earthy coffees from their Suspension roasted coffee beans. Renovations of their roastery in Carrington are underway with plans for artist studios, coffee training, workshops, and events. They also have a suspended coffee system to give people in need heartwarming coffee. Selecting from their choice of coffees off the shelf was tough but we decided on Bee’s Knees because we can’t go past a delicious toffee note. We promise this won’t disappoint – expect an A1 black ‘n’ strong from french press to espresso, a touch of milk only sweetens the ride.
