Sydney Coffee Culture

WELCOME TO SYDNEY!  While the iconic Opera House is one of the wonders of the world (ok, we’re biased..but who wouldn’t be) and our urban beach culture envied – Sydney’s unique independent cafes and coffee culture are destinations all to themselves.

Our first fabulous Sydney tasting box showcases the best-selling and most loved roasts from the city’s best.

Featuring signature roasts behind its inner-city hipster cafes, to its most famous Instagrammed beach venues – our Sydney box has been created and curated by the specialty coffee pioneers and maestros that make Sydney’s coffee as legendary as the city itself.

Single O – Reservoir

Single O is widely considered to have (singlehandedly) pioneered the emergence of single-origin and an authentic sustainable specialty coffee culture in Sydney to create the benchmark for other roasters globally to follow. Today, nearly twenty years after they opened their famous flagship cafe in Surry Hills, they continue to be an innovator and creator of many coffee industry ‘firsts’ such as with cold brew varieties on tap, a cold brew breaky schooner, and importing record-breaking beans from Ethiopia to pour Australia’s first $20 cup of coffee (worth every cent!). The list of Single O’s mindful practices to do their bit for Mother Earth while supporting the beans and dreams of people and the planet goes on to improve pressures at the origin, cafes, and roastery operations but we believe their biggest game-changer yet has been pioneering a bladder based industrial design system now used by many conscious baristas, and saving the planet from millions of plastic 2 litre bottles. Let’s sip to that!

With an established flagship cafe in Surry Hills, a permanent coffee stall in Sydney’s most famous gourmet farmers market, and even an outpost in Tokyo – Single O’s locations go straight onto our ‘must visit’ travel list.

Their signature Reservoir blend – aptly named after the street where the Single O sprung from the ashes in 2003 – is the pride and joy and the popular staple that everyone returns to.  This current edition of their house blend combines beans from Kenya, Uganda, and Colombia with a strong focus on the Kenyan Kirinyaga where Single O handpicked beans from hundreds of cupping lots to ensure consistency and quality is served in every cup. Considered to be the bright spark of Single O’s premium coffees with its trademark vibrancy of stone fruits and structure in every sip, you’ll understand why GQ Australia called this one of the brightest and sweetest coffees you’ll ever try. Simply an iconic blend from a Sydney coffee icon.

Sonoma – Body

First bread. Then coffee. The mantra behind Sonoma’s delicious coffee blend that has become almost as famous as their sourdough bread.  Australia’s pioneering artisan bread company may not have set out to become coffee roasters but their obsessively loyal sourdough fans simply wanted a great cup of coffee when they went to pick up their breakfast loaf and thus Sonoma coffee was born.  If you’re in Bondi beach and grabbing a coffee – there’s a good chance you’ll end up at Sonoma. Their coffee blend, ‘Body’ is roasted and brewed with the same principles of their artisan bread making. This signature blend has been created especially for Sydneysider’s love of milk-based coffees – it’s rich, full-bodied, and flavourful with sweet notes of chocolate, caramel, maple, raisin, and toffee.  No other coffee blend screams ‘Bondi Beach’ like Sonoma’s body blend.

Fat Poppy – Hollywood

The Hollywood Blend is bursting onto the Home Barista’s scene as the first blockbuster coffee we’re featuring from Fat Poppy, an inspiring coffee brand and community created by one of Australia’s first female coffee roasters in Sydney’s inner west. If Girl Power equaled Coffee Power, then this is it.  A flavour deserving of bright lights and action is how the roaster describes their most popular blend which is a 50-50 combination of Ethiopian and Brazilian beans and tastes like a cup of chocolate-coated blueberries with hints of milk chocolate and honeycomb. Fat Poppy’s motto is ‘You can change the world after a good cup of coffee.’  You’re guaranteed to take on the world at your best when you wake up with this fearless cup of coffee.

Sitch – Blackfield

A welcome return to Stitch – the inner city roastery that created Coffee Selector’s first bespoke ‘Jaffa’ blend for our sell-out Christmas coffee box. Here’s the Blackfield – their most popular coffee blend that’s served up in over 30 cafes around Sydney. It’s simply a great cup of coffee that’s specially created to combine delicious flavours of milk chocolate, peanut butter, and toffee. The blend consists of four origins – two natural Brazilian beans (Caldas Royal and Mogiana, together with the washed Popayan Reserve bean from Colombia and finished off with a Papua New Guinea highlands bean.  Named after the song and band, Blackfield, that the roaster was listening to at the time of creating this blend – the vibes of the coffee notes match the easy-going, easy listening vibes of its namesake song.  And that’s a coffee philosophy we’ll sip to, thank you.
