We’re kicking off 2022 with Selector Brett Cockburn venturing into the heartland and secret gems of northern New South Wales best coffee roasters in the Northern NSW Collection.
I have been one of Coffee Selectors first subscribers to the Home Baristas Club Spoil Me coffee subscription and their monthly deliveries have been an integral part of my Australian coffee journey. Like so many others in this Home Barista community, I worship the Australian holy trinity of coffee, food and beach.
I certainly love my coffee! Working as a Chef, in the fast-paced hospitality industry I consume on average – four to twelve espresso shots a day so you’re in good, knowledgeable hands as I lead this month’s cuppas with my top regional picks.
I’m an Aussie bloke who’s all about family and friends, a native of Newcastle only recently moving to Coffs Harbour a few years ago. When I am not cooking in the kitchen or hanging out in my favourite coffee spots, you’ll find me at the beach or indulging in adrenalin fuelled adventure sports – canyoning, bungee jumping, snowboarding – anything fast and furious, just like the way I take my coffee!
I have been an avid fan of Coffee Selectors from the beginning because I love the surprise factor every month – I never know what I’m going to find in the box to tempt my coffee palate’ and I fastidiously keep every single tasting note along with my personal score for each so I know exactly where to go on my travels to visit my favourite roasters in person.
I’m particularly a fan of lighter roasts with soft fruity textures – and any coffee that makes me want for more!
I must confess also that I’m a wog at heart, with a deep appreciation of great quality coffee and pasta in endless amounts. I’m planning on publishing my first cookbook in 2022 (Home Baristas alert!) where I will share my favourite recipes in a unique friendly, easy going manner that’s my trademark. Chef’s recipes for family and friends – easy to make and enjoy. My favourite recipe is pasta with seafood – a fantastically fresh Aussie take on an Italian classic. I make my own pasta by hand cause fresh is best!
For anyone travelling to Coffs Harbour, my top three local cafes and roasters are Artisti (who are featured in this box), Salute espresso; with beans roasted by Stoka, and Supply Cafe.
My all time favourite cafe is in New Zealand, Queenstown, my adventure capital nirvana where I head to Fergs. They do a four shot coffee aptly called the Quadzilla. You probably don’t need to go bungee jumping after this – your senses will probably take you there alone!
Coffs Harbour Artisti Coffee Roasters – Champion
Aptly named Champion, this is the best selling signature blend from Coffs Harbour speciality coffee pioneer, Artisti whose roastery and espresso bar is a destination that all coffee lovers head for. If you’ve stopped for coffee here, chances are – you’re drinking the Champion. Artisti’s unique roasting philosophy reflects their passion to create and share great coffee tips and knowledge among their local community and beyond – it’s no surprise they are trailblazers in creating some of the best coffee videos for aspiring baristas and home baristas alike. Legions of loyal followers applaud this famous blend for striking the perfect balance between strength and flavour that keeps the medium to strong milk drinkers happy – but also possesses a great crisp clarity and sweetness for the black connoisseur. With top notes of milk chocolate, maple syrup and jasmine, you’ll be enjoying this one in the true company of champions.
Branches Coffee Roasters – Seasonal
Branches is an all organic roastery in South Murwillumbah with a philosophy centred on the ‘approachable and simple’ created to bridge the important gap between speciality coffee and accessibility to the home drinker, or the home barista! Reflecting the famous health and community ethos of this region, all of Branches’ beans and blends are organic with its signature blend featuring Nicaragua Selva Negra and Guatemala Renacimento beans – the latter grown by an all women co-op in Guatemala that’s good enough to feature as a single origin. Roasted in small batches, Branches creates custom blends for partner cafes as well as seasonal origins, all green sourced through First Crop Coffee in Melbourne. Iconic Darby Street Newcastle cafe CORE Espresso has religiously stocked Branches since day one. Time for you to taste why.
Botero Coffee Roasters – BRASS
No visit to Maclean in the Clarence Valley is complete without stopping at Botero Coffee Roasters, a stunning landmark destination steeped in local history for coffee lovers who flock here in droves. Botero’s family and community focussed coffee reputation has propelled their successful expansion over the years to a café in Brisbane as well as a base in Tasmania ensuring this region’s most famous local roastery is enjoyed all over Australia. Brass is their popular, signature blend featuring beans from Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Kenya which are roasted to produce a smooth full bodied, dark roast brimming with rich caramel flavours and hints of gentle spices. Perfect for all coffee styles, this versatile and bold blend will transport you to the most beautiful roastery in this region with every sip.
